Regional Chair Annual Address- Ajax Tonight

April 8th, 2013

As I was browsing the agenda for Todays Council meeting did I notice that Roger Anderson is making his Annual Address to Council.

I have other plans but if I had more notice perhaps I would have juggled my schedule to attended.

Town of Ajax could have alerted via twitter he was coming,  we have one Regional Councillor that uses twitter but no mention.

So Roger is making the rounds, maybe he is working east to West and Pickering is next.  Not sure.

Ajax Council allows public questions at the end of the meeting on any item that is on the Agenda.

Kelly Guthrie Community Engagement Coordinator  from the City of Guelph will be sharing her knowledge of Participatory Budgeting as a concept and how the City of Guelph uses this to engage citizens”
Kelly has spoken about this topic on CBC radio in the past.

Maddie Di Muccio , Councillor Town of Newmarket, Regular Columnist  Toronto Sun  will talk about Council Transparency.

Joey Coleman , - Is Canada’s first crowdfunded journalist. Based in Hamilton, Joey covers all municipal government and board meetings, responds to reader inquiries at all hours, and livestreams from breaking news events. Prior to breaking out on his own, Joey worked for Maclean’s and The Globe and Mail. A nerd at heart, Joey is a leader in Hamilton’s Open Data movement believing that journalism is not gatekeeping, but gate-opening.
The topic of Joey’s talk is entitled “Building an Open Data ecosystem for all to access, not just elites”
How do we build open data so it is accessible to all citizens and not just those with specialized skills such as information management or coding? In Hamilton, municipal open data is being implemented because of advocacy among neighbourhood associations and community groups, not solely from the developer community, with the goal of ensuring all citizens can use open data. It’s a unique partnership - what does it mean for open data, open government, and civic engagement?
Join this discussion as we explore the question. Read the rest of this entry »

Pay to Use Carpool lanes - Stupid! Slap in face to carpoolers

March 26th, 2013

Ont. Finance Minister Charles Sousa was floating the idea of single occupant vehicles paying to use the HOV lanes.   My carpool was livid and we don’t even have the use of them on our commute.

The carpool lanes were put in place to encourage carpooling and they are growing in use.  I have coworkers in Mississauga that use the QEW lanes and the 404 lanes.  There are those that are against carpool lanes because they claim the lanes will just be added to the road capacity and revert to regular lanes in time.  Don’t prove them right.

The original plan for the QEW widening did not include carpool lanes but the Halton Environmental Network lobbied hard to have the carpool lane constructed since they were doing the road work anyways while the 404 was a planned carpool project. Read the rest of this entry »

Snow Plow Map- And it is colour coded!

March 6th, 2013

In the Snow post I had written I wished there was a snow removal map that was colour coded so I could see where I was in the schedule,  it is not everything I had wanted but it does show what areas are cleared by Contractor companies and what areas are cleared by Town of Ajax staff.  All the trucks you see are with a Town Logo.

I had asked some questions regarding Snow clearing and here are Dave Meredith’s , Director of Operations responses.  The map is from 2011/12 season but it was the only electronic copy available.  It does need to be updated and hopefully this information will make it to the website. Renrick Ashby update Liquer Licence Court Date

February 15th, 2013

I received an email from Nancy Henry, she attended the hearing and states that Renrick was not in attendance.

Here is her email.

I was in court today to view the outcome of the charges laid against Councillor Ashby.

He(Lawyer)  only represented Renrick & Nexx…….
No lawyer present for Permell & Erica Ashby.
Councillor Ashby’s lawyer told the judge that Erica and Permell had not come to see him yet….although he suspected they would and he might be representing all of them.

The lawyer received new discoveries today from the prosecution. As a result he’s asked for a continuance until, March 19,1:30.

Mr. Ashbys lawyer told the judge that they were on there way to working out a deal with the prosecution.

So…no Renrick today….no Erica or Permell. Just lawyers!

So it appears the Nexx Lounge is a Family business.   No press was in attendance that Nancy noticed.

His next date is next Friday for zoning issues.

That was a lot of Snow! - Town response was confusing!

February 15th, 2013

Well it’s been a week since the big snowstorm last Friday and the snow is on it’s way to melting.   I have to tell you though I did enjoy it and was happy to see some winter for a change but living in an Urban area large amounts of snow will always present challenges for residents and Operations.

I would  not want to be a snow plow operator and I am sure the job is very hard.  I salute those that did their best to keep our roads clear.   Now on to my general feelings of the response. Read the rest of this entry »
