Support our Farmer’s Markets - Ajax and Pickering - Community Garden Open House

We have 2 Farmer’s markets to choose from in the Ajax and Pickering area, the first one is at Vandemeers every Thursday from 1-6pm  until October 27th, the next time I am home in time on a Thursday I will check it out.

If you are in the Pickering area and available earlier there is a new Market running weekly at Ontario Power Generation.   Here is some information I was provided from Don Terry.

Everyone is invited to our farmers’ market in Pickering…Every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m…It’s on the north west side of Montgomery Park Road (Brock Road south and west on Montgomery)…Watch for signs directing you…Local farm fresh fruit, vegetables, breads, baking, beef, lamb, preserves, jams, kettle corn, and much more…

With 80% or so of Durham Region in the greenbelt we need to support our farmers.   If you like to take that drive into the Country to see cows and the nice scenary,  buy local when you can.   We have Pick your own places to visit on the weekends and all sorts of opportunity to purchase direct from the farm.   It really is a circle,  if farmers are not supported we get more subdivisions.

Farmers Markets are less expensive then purchasing Ontario Grown at the supermarket sometimes because you are bypassing the middleman.

Another way to eat local is to participate in a Community Garden.  I am part of the St. Andrews Community Garden and am doing my best to grow some produce to share with someone who will distribute via food-bank.

St. Andrew’s Community Garden is at St. Andrews Park on Exeter Road in Ajax,  we are having an open house on July 16th between the hours of 10 am and 2pm.   Come by and see what it is all about and see the gardens our members are working hard on.
