New page - Durham Region Municipality Public Meetings - Page updates

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Update on Minutes page- March 26th minutes are linked to.   In the Council meeting Minutes you also have the minutes of various Advisory Committees,  watch for news about a Farmer’s Market that hopefully will be on Saturdays  in Pickering Village area.

I have added a new page that links to each of Durham’s 8 Municipalities Public Meetings links if they exist or main page.  With the Direct Election results at the Region on the 4th of April it is important to watch for the public meetings that will be scheduled in other Communities, I will plan to go to Whitby’s if I don’t have anything else to do.

Direct Election of the Regional Chair- Durham

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

The Region of Durham is holding a public meeting tomorrow morning at 10 am,  I am taking the day off work to attend.

This is in regards to the issue of Direct Election of the Regional Chair position.

I have a confession to make.  In 2006 when only Ajax, Oshawa and Pickering had the question on the ballot, I voted No.   Let me explain.  I thought at least the Chair should come from elected Councillors though.

I was under the impression the Regional Chair was a figurehead and only chaired meetings and was like the Speaker of the house per say, I know it sounds silly but really what do other people know about his role, the average citizen , of which I was in 2006 before opening this blog.   I did not think he had a tie breaking vote though like the elected Speaker in Ottawa.
I was not as politically aware in either Ajax or Durham politics.   I don’t vote yes for something I don’t understand.

Then…. I learned the Regional Chair moves motions and has a lot more power then I knew so in 2010 I did vote Yes.

Over 200K in salary, moves motions, sits on every Committee, should be elected by me.

Others say- “Why not appoint from sitting Mayors or Council?”
** I don’t get to vote for anyone but a single Ward and Regional Councillor plus my own Mayor.
**Local candidates run local elections in scope.

Urge your Council to support this Democratic method of Selection of the Regional Chair.

I will endorse the site :    It’s my job as a citizen do this advocacy.

If you can’t make it to the meeting tomorrow, let your views be known to Councillors, your own and WHITBY’S !!!!!!!!!!!!!

New Page on right side- Verbatim Records of meetings

Monday, March 26th, 2012

I created a new page to document the activities of this wider issue I am advocating for.

Verbatim Records of meetings.  In the pages section.

Sunshine 2012(2011 disclosure) - No ORNGE in Ajax at least

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

I have all the Municipalities from Durham that are on the list,  except the North.  They only have a few, give them a few years!

Here is the link to the excel file with all the salaries , it will open as a webpage.   This has 2009 to 2011.  Most increases are not exorbitant, I got a raise this year too. (more…)

OMFG- I can’t believe what I just read

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

First off,  Brock readers are in Durham so the Brock Citizen should be part of  not Kiwartha times or whatever,  Kiwartha doesn’t give a crap about Durham chair I bet.

Here is todays article,  read Keith Shier’s comments, the way it is coming across, the voters who voted yes did not really understand the question, the article does not indicate his support. So if I am wrong, correct me.

Now on the premise that Keith is not for direct election, his candidate profile is very suspect.  “There should be no secret deals or meetings”  I agree fully.

The referendum question was on all ballots in the Region last election, it was candidates responsibility to educate the electorate.

All Durham news sources of metroland should be together.

No doubt many Brock residents work in neighbouring York Region and Kiwartha but for political boundaries, they are in Durham Region and should be exposed to the news of Durham Region.

Action Committee Meeting- Accountability Starts at the Top

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

I went to the meeting tonight, it was interesting, met some nice people and no one hit me on the head with a baseball bat.  I have to admit I was a bit nervous as I did not know how some view me in this issue.  I explained myself and hopefully they took it for what it was.

I am planning to take the day off work to attend the April 4th meeting at the Region, who want’s to go?

There was a gentlemen that made the trip all the way down from Port Perry,  He is not happy with the stance the north communities have taken.

I can say that some citizens are taking up the cause, the ones in the room will be contacting councils in their municipalities but I will also be reaching out.

I will ask Councillors though and if they tell me their vote plan I will share it here on the blog. Not going to speculate at this point.

What are your thoughts on Direct Election?

I would like Ajax people to show up , regular citizens and show you care about it.

Councillor Shaun Collier stopped in for a few minutes.

Hansard– Why not at the Municipal level

Monday, March 19th, 2012

I have come to the conclusion that the ultimate method of having Municipal council minutes better and more informative to the citizen that was not there is to not have minutes at all but have this.

The debates of the House of Commons are reported verbatim, recording correctly what was said by each Member in the House. Slight verbal alterations are allowed to be made by a Member in order to make the meaning more precise and accurate; however, no words or phrases may be inserted to effect material changes in the meaning of what was actually said in the House.

Hansard.   I ask why not?

I have read minutes of meetings I was at and there is no mention of councillors questions on anything or staff responses,  just “The issue of  _____ was discussed”  I would like to know more!

So what if the council meeting is broadcast on tv,  if I miss it I want to read the record.  I can watch CPAC and watch question period, doesn’t mean I can’t read the hansard a year later if I want to.

Sounds like a question for the Province because any time you want to change something at the Municipal level they just point upwards.

Joe?  Joe Dickson are you there? What do you think?

Then I could do just what How’d they Vote do stats on them.

Technically the Hansard is created because they record the official spoken word at the “meeting” .  It’s amazing that technology has advanced that software exists to take the recorded audio and transcribe it for editing.  Not like some clerk has to sit and type it all up!

Mayor Parish Committee Attendance- Metroland article

Friday, March 16th, 2012

I won’t bother writing my own post, I don’t have much to add.  Here is the online
article.  I was emailed for my comments, it was a complete surprise to me!

I did not hunt down the joint committee meetings and the article said he has gone to half of those.

Maybe the Region should ask for it’s money back on the time missed?

I think the Town of Ajax pays his full salary and the Regional portion is paid back to Ajax from the Region.  He does not get two cheques.

What do you think?   He claims he was doing other Mayoral duties during the committee time, should the citizens of Whitby and Pickering , Oshawa etc. cover this?

Here’s an idea, the base Regional Councillor pay should be for the Mandatory Regional Council meetings then be paid per meeting attended.

The Parish Bylaw we can call it.

Assign his pay and vote to Shaun or Colleen or he needs to make the time to be at the meetings.

Seconded by  Shaun Collier or Colleen Jordan ????????

Regional Minutes link available - Motion from Colleen Jordan put forward

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

I have updated the page Regional Minutes and Agendas.

All Ajax Councillors were at the meeting, details about a motion Colleen Jordan moved is on the page as well.

I had a letter to the editor in print today, Ajax news advertiser regarding the website issue.  It was written before I had all my questions answered, first in an email from CAO Brian Skinner, in a less then pleasant tone I will add,  then I had a telephone conversation with the Mayor and had some more questions answered.  I went to Ottawa for a few days and forgot to bring my notes.   I will be writing a post on the weekend regarding our conversation.

The reason the Mayor missed the fall Regional Council meetings and committee meetings is because he had his hip replaced , his physical therapy is at the same time as the Health and Social Services committee meeting,  this doesn’t explain the rest of the year but our conversation sheds light onto it.   Don’t worry though, he is almost in full bike riding form.

Accountability starts at the top email

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

I just have to laugh,  I received an email from accountability starts at the top admin this was to alert about a community action meeting for March 20th. The first email had the admin email tag wrong but people could just reply to original email so I fail to see the need for a second email that was to correct it.  The second email had everyone’s email address in the cc field instead of bcc.

The result is that all the people that signed up for alerts have had their emails distributed to  all of the people on list.

So much for my privacy being protected.
